Hello friends! I'm Sharon Hazel, Santa artist for over 30 years. I live in the small rural town of Gay, Georgia. Established in 1882, the town was named after William Gay when he opened the first store and post office. The community I live in along with my passion for antiques, vintage character, and stories from the past, have all been a big influence for my primitive and folk art style when creating my Santas!
Naming my business "Buttermilk Primitives" is a nod to my grandma and granddaddy. I grew up in a military family, yes, I'm an Airforce brat, traveling the world in my early years. The few times we were able to come home, my grandparents would always make sure I learned the ways of country life. Milking cows and churning butter are one of my fondest memories.
I work alone, no staff, I create it all and enjoy every moment! What's my favorite part of creating you may wonder? After searching for vintage fabrics, cutting then stitching the clothes, building the bodies, cutting out, sanding and painting the wooden stands, sculpting, painting then aging the clay faces, washing and preparing the wool for the beards, and making all the toys they hold...probably my favorite part is putting it all together! My Santas and signature handmade toys are of my own designs. All are signed, dated and most one of a kind.
I have enjoyed creating Santas for over 30 years and I'm blessed to be able to rely on my creativity as my full time occupation.
My style has evolved over the years. When I discovered my love for primitives, that's when I introduced it into my work. Most of my Santas stand about 19" tall. On occasion, I make shorter and taller Santas and even sitting Santas.
I sculpt the clay faces; paint, then age the faces for that primitive look we all love. I use washed sheeps wool for the beards, moustache and brows.
I use mostly vintage quilts for the clothing. I'm always on the search for late 1800's - early 1900's cutter quilts to repurpose into my Santas. I create with linens that I age and distress as well.
My signature handmade primitive toys the Santas hold and candy canes using a cotton spun technique and vintage fabrics are just a few of the details you will enjoy in my work. Distressed genuine leather belts, rusty jingle and sleigh bells can be expected too!
Pricing depends on the fabrics used and the toys they hold. Price range would be between $189 - 365+.
I put lots of prep work and detail into each creation! Thank you for understanding that there's just not enough time for me to take orders. Once I have enough product finished, typically every two weeks or so, I'll post the date for restock on my website. When I restock, you'll see photos of each item available with full details including prices. Decide your favorite, place your item in the cart and proceed to checkout. I ship the next business day!
Follow my Buttermilk Primitives Facebook or Instagram page to watch videos of my work in progress! Also, by following my social media, you'll receive notifications of when I'm close to another restock!
